Alcohol Addiction
For most adults moderate alcohol use is relatively harmless. However for some it is a different matter. People who are alcohol dependent (alcoholism) have lost control of their alcohol use and are often unable to stop drinking once they start. This can cause substantial physical and emotional damage to the individual, their families and the community.
Problem drinking has multiple causes with genetic, physiological, psychological and social/environmental factors all playing a role. Those with alcohol dependence usually cannot stop drinking through willpower alone. There are several treatment approaches including counselling, step-based programs, peer-support or a combination of these.
Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a dependence on an illegal drug or a medication. When individuals are addicted, they may not be able to control their drug use and may continue using the drug despite the harm it causes. It can have serious long term consequences including problems with physical and mental health, relationships, employment and the law. Like alcohol addiction, treatment can include counselling, step-based programs, peer-support or a combination of these.
Gambling Addiction
Problem gambling is an urge to continuously gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. It is an addictive disorder with sufferers exhibiting many similarities to those who have substance addictions. Problem gambling can be characterized by many difficulties and can lead to severe personal and social consequences for the gambler and those around them including their health, relationships, loss of job, debt, bankruptcy, fraud and crime. Like alcohol addictions there are several approaches available for treating it. Treatment can include counselling, step-based programs, self-help and peer-support or a combination of these.
Sex Addiction
Sex addiction is characterised by an individual’s intense and overwhelming desire to take part in sexual activity. Sex addiction typically causes the addict’s thinking to be distorted and they will often rationalise their behaviour in some way. It may include excessively watching pornography, obsessively thinking about sex for long periods of time to the point where it interferes with other priorities, risk taking behaviours including unsafe sex, excessive masturbation, sex in public places posing a risk of physical harm, multiple one night stands, cybersex and, sexually harassing others. Sex addicts feel a lack of control over their behaviour and consequences can include: financial stress including job loss or excessive spending on sexual services; ill health including STIs, HIV, Hepatitis, unwanted pregnancy and; a lack of social support due to an excessive focus on sex.
Many sex addicts feel guilt and shame about their addiction but are unable to quit on their own. Support is available in the form of counselling, sex addiction support groups, mentors and/or family member(s).
Internet/Video Game Addiction
This is an excessive and/or compulsive use of computer/video games which negatively interferes with a person’s daily life. Video game addiction may present as compulsive game-playing and/or a hyper-focus on in-game achievements to the exclusion of other events in one’s life.
Like compulsive gambling it is an impulse control disorder and excessive use of video games may have some or all of the symptoms of other psychological addictions including social isolation, mood swings, neck/back pain, headaches and digestive problems.
