Shingles Vaccine (Shingrix)

图层 9

Shingles, also named Herpes Zoster, is a contagious disease caused by varicella zoster virus. Once chickenpox has resolved, the virus remains inactive in nerve cells. Shingles may happen to people who have had chickenpox before, even if you are in good health.

We can’t predict when shingles will occur, but what we do know is:

  1. 98% of Hong Kong adults are at risk of shingles, and the risk increases significantly from the age of 50.
  2. One out of three people would experience shingles in their lifetime.
  3. Shingles can occur and relapse at any time. It can be very painful.

Symptom

When the virus is reactivated, it travels along the nerve to different parts of the skin. The side of the back and waist is the most common location of the disease. Severe cases may lead to facial nerve paralysis, vision loss or even blindness and deafness.

Common symptoms include skin pain, numbness, and itching. The severity of symptoms varies from person to person. Some patients experience only mild pain, while others experience blistering, extreme burning, or excruciating pain. Some patients still feel discomfort even after the rash subsides, and are extremely sensitive to light touch.

30% of patients suffer from post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), which can cause sharp pain, searing pain and tingling pain. Even after the shingles has healed, PHN can persist for months or years. When the patient gets older, the risk of PHN will be higher. Other potential complications include: acute viral encephalitis, stroke and herpes zoster ophthalmicus.
